Doing It Yourself vs Hiring a Specialist

Search engine optimisation always divides opinion, with many believing that it’s something best left to the experts, but with others believing that it’s best to do it yourself. The truth is that there are pros and cons of both ways:
Doing It Yourself
Hiring a Specialist
You won’t have the knowledge base of a SEO firm but through putting in the effort a good understanding of SEO can be achieved
Good SEO companies will know the latest techniques and be able to adjust to industry developments quickly
Relatively cheap – the only expense is buying links
Can be expensive and is not ideal for cash flow as rankings take a while to be achieved
Very time consuming
SEO company usually deals with everything
If search engine optimisation is just one of many marketing strategies it may be best to initially try optimising your site on your own
If achieving high search engine rankings is critical to business success it may be wise to recruit the services of a professional SEO firm
Industry Competitiveness
If a competitive industry many other companies will have hired SEO firms – it’s not easy to beat them on your own
In an uncompetitive industry an SEO firm could obtain excellent results. In a competitive industry be careful that the SEO firm does not choose keyw...

Search Engine Optimisation vs Pay Per Click Advertising

Search Engine Optimisation (SEO) is the process of modifying a website to achieve high organic rankings in search engines for certain keywords.
Pay per Click (PPC) advertising  is where you pay a search engine every time some clicks on your ad. Google Adwords is the main company in this sector.
In 2005, £4.70 billion was spent on Pay per Click marketing, compared to only £1.05 billion for search engine optimisation. Both techniques have their advantages and disadvantages summarised below:
Search Engine Optimisation
Pay per Click
- High up-front costs before results are achieved
- No guarantee of success
- Lower long-term cost if successful
- Results-based
- Only pay for click-throughs
- When marketing budget runs out the results stop
Time Frame
- It’s a long-term process, anything from 3-9 months
- Instant, can be up-and-running within minutes
Search Results
- 50% of search engine users choose to visit websites that appear in the top organic listings
- 80% of search engine visitors report that they never click on sponsored ads
- Organic click-through rates are on average 3 times higher than for paid listings
- Some SEO companies make large changes to your site making it less attractive to visitors, resulting in fewer conversions and sales
- Click-through rates tend to be quite low, between 2% and 5%
-  There is some evidence to suggest that the conversion rate for paid listings is lower but this is likely to vary depending on your industry
- Excellent for geographic targeting
- SEO companies may choose keywords that they can get high rankings for but which aren’t high traffic keywords or aren’t targeting the right people
- Full control over target keywords and tracking means that you can determine what is profitable and what isn’t
- In competitive industries relevant keywords can be very expensive
- 72.3% of people feel that Google’s organic search results are more relevant than the sponsored listings
- 86% of search engine users feel that organic listings are more relevant than paid listings
- Some SEO companies use ‘black-hat’ methods which can get your website banned from search engines
- Estimates suggest that click fraud accounts for 15-20% of all click-throughs
- Only 11% of advertisers report that they receive a higher Return on Investment (ROI) through PPC than SEO
- The long-term process of SEO means that initially ROI can be very low
- PPC is a lower ris...

SEO – An Introductory Guide

The internet has become the place where many people go first to look for information or find a company. Owning a business without having a visible web presence means that in the vast majority of cases you are missing out on many potential customers.

However, just having a website is not the solution. The website must be ranked highly in search engines in order for people to come across it. Search Engine Optimisation (SEO) is the process of achieving this, and can be done in-house or left to the specialists. SEO techniques are always evolving so often it is best to pay for an SEO firm to optimise your website for important keywords.

When searching for an SEO company it is worth being careful. Two optimisation techniques are often described - White Hat and Black Hat Methods.

  • White hat methods refer to using those techniques recommended by the search engine guidelines. In other words, what is and isn’t acceptable. These methods include inserting relevant title tags, developing interesting content and encouraging the use of keyword-rich inbound links.

  • Black hat methods are ways of improving the ranking of a website by using methods disproved of by search engines, mainly because they are seen as being deceptive. Websites found using these disproved methods can be banned from the search engines and once banned it is very hard to become listed again. These disallowed techniques include inserting hidden or invisible text into web pages and cloaking, the practice of presenting content to the search engine spider that is different from that which is presented in the user’s browser.

Some SEO companies use black hat methods so it’s worth thoroughly researching which company to use through following up testimonials and checking opinions on online business forums. When it comes to SEO, more than most other marketing services, be extra cautious before taking up a cheap quote.

The effectiveness of SEO can vary dep...
